Iwi of origin to return
Iwi of Origin is returning to Tāmaki Makaurau.
The two-day festival was started in 2006 by Auckland Sport and Recreation – Aktive – as a celebration of Māori sports, reo and culture, but took a four-year hiatus because of Covid.
Māori partnership manager Manu Pihama says it’s similar to pā wars but for Auckland urban Māori.
“Those of us who have grown up in Auckland myself, you know growing up out in Ōtara and Manurewa, you know, being an urban setting and we are away from our, our marae my one down in Te Papa o Rotu in the Waikato and you know, away from home. So we’re looking for places to connect this one to connect under their banner of of our culture, celebrating who we are,” he says.
The competition on October 14 and 15 at Bruce Pullman Park in Papakura will include sports like rugby union, league, basketball and darts as well as some f traditional games.
