Stage set for digital media revenue sharing debate

Broadcasting Minster Willie Jackson says Māori media will benefit from the Fair Digital News Media Bargaining Bill, which was part of a raft of legislation introduced into Parliament in its final week and sent to select committee.
The Bill is a bid to get fair deals from big tech companies using Aotearoa New Zealand media content online.
Mr Jackson says it will support a free and independent news media ecosystem.
He says while some large companies have been able to strike deals, regional, rural, Māori, Pacific and other small media companies missed out.
“In terms of Māori they were not doing deals so the digital giants were not able to complete deals with Whakaata Maori and iwi radio and they were doing deals everywhere else so it is going to bring justice to the marketplace. It may be Māori, Pākeha, they might be in New Plymouth, Whāngarei, where ever, they’re going to get some revenue back,” he says.
