Compassion soup kitchen rattling the tin
The Sisters of Compassion’s Wellington’s soup kitchen – Te Pūaroha – is appealing for some help of its own after 122 years of service to the community.
Acting spokesperson Gabriel Tupou says the kitchen in Tory St feeds about 150 people a sitting morning and night six days a week.
It relies on regular donations of kai and putea.
He says this year life seems to have gotten even harder for the needy and homeless, so any donations of putea and non-perishable food are welcome.
“It’s just keeping things going during these tough times and we know that our people and our communities are a giving people. So yes, it is tough for our people to live, but it’s also tough to keep these services going,” he says/.

Gabriel Tupou says the example of order founder Suzanne Aubert inspired his late grandfather Bruce Stewart to work with the homeless and build Tapu Te Ranga Marae near the Home of Compassion in Island Bay.
