Google translation needs reo referees
Te reo speakers can help Google create a Māori translation service.
Te Taka Keegan, a senior computer science lecturer at Waikato University, says the internet giant wants to add te reo Māori to the 71 languages already covered by Google Translate.
Mr Keegan, who was part of the initiative to create the Google Māori search engine, says it will only happen if Māori contribute.
He says it means people will be able to create Māori websites and not worry about people not being able to know what they are about.
Google New Zealand says Google Translate uses machine translation, but it needs Māori speakers to rate the translations to see if the technology is ready to go live.Today is the start of Māori Language Week.
