Pacific hot as Japan starts Fukushima waste dumping
The Green Party’s kaikōrero Pasifika Teanau Tuiono is calling on the Government to condemn Japan’s dumping of radioactive water in the ocean.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company has started releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean in what it says will be a 30 year process.
Teanau Tuiono says it’s unacceptable, expecially given the history of the region.
“I would like the New Zealand Government to call out Japan in terms of dumping radioactive-contaminated wstewter into the Pacific because it’s also important to remember the legacy of nuclear testing in the Pacific – we’re talking about Bikini Island and Mururoa. We are nuclear free. We should be continuing to support a nuclear free and independent Pacific,” he says.
Teanau Tuiono says the Green Party stands in solidarity with people across the Pacific.
