Luxon to claw back Māori vote

National leader Chris Luxon says he wants to go back to giving pakeha a veto over Māori voters.
ACT has pledged to get rid of Māori wards on local councils, where a councillor is selected by people on the Maori electoral roll.
Mr Luxon says National would just go back to the situation that existed for the 20 years until 2021, when a council’s decision to create a Māori ward could be overturned by a referendum triggered by a petition.
“All we are saying is we will go back to the pre-2021 position on Māori wards which is actually that local communities, if they decide they want to create a Māori ward, that’s great, and if there are people opposed to that or don’t think it’s a good idea, that should be a discussion that happens in a local community,” he says.
