Read, write and count proper new Government policy

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says how core subjects like maths and reading are taught can’t be left to chance.
The Government is introducing changes to the Education and Training Act to make core teaching requirements for maths, reading and writing to become compulsory.
The requirements will be released in Term 4 and used from next year.
Mr Hipkins says it’s something the Education Ministry has been working on since he became the minister in 2017.
“We’ve been working on reshaping the curriculum to make sure the core basics every young New Zealander needs aren’t left to chance. We’ve been doing that based on evidence on what’s actually going to work. We’ve had teachers and education experts working on this, not politicians in the Beehive. I think what they’ve come up with is really sound, it’s based on evidence and it will work,” he says.
