Pasifika MPs need to drive turnout

Outgoing Mangere MP Aupito Su’a William Sio says history could repeat in October with a Labour victory depending on South Auckland’s voters.
That’s what happened in 2005 when turnout in the southside sent Helen Clark’s Labour-led Government back for a third term.
He says Pasifika MP’s will expect more cabinet seats and responsibilities.
“You can be assured that the new crop of Pasifika MP’s coming through aren’t just going to sit on their hands, they are going to work hard they are going to win their electorates and then they are going to have expectations after the elections.” says Aupito Su’a William Sio.
Only two Pasifika were in the top 20 of Labour’s party list announced yesterday, deputy prime minister Carmel Sepuloni at number 3 and the current Minister of Pacific Peoples, Barbara Edmonds at 19.
Neither of them are from South Auckland.
Jenny Salesa MP for Otara Papatoetoe is 24, Neru Leavasa MP for Takanini is 38, Anahila Kanongata’a List MP for Papakura is 34 while high profile candidate for Māngere Lemaunga Lydia Sosene is 53.
The fifth South Auckland MP is Arena Williams nō Kai Tahu, Rongowhaata, Tuhoe is 48.
Prime Minister Chris Hipkins wouldn’t be drawn into discussions on their ranking saying only, that he expects them to win their seats.
