Mortality review shake-up allows Māori focus

The Health Quality & Safety Commission Te Tāhū Hauora has changed its national mortality review function to make it more responsive to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Director Don Matheson says it’s part of an overhaul that came into effect on July 1 that brought together five entities tasked with reviewing fixed categories of mortality with a single national mortality review committee.
He says it gives the agency the ability to look across all areas of mortality and prioritise specific aspects for review.
This supports a focus on reducing preventable mortality and addressing current inequities that exist across many population groups, particularly Māori.
