Meal provider My Food Bag is bringing Matariki into thousands of homes this week with a special menu.
Subscribers are being given options including wild game hāngi parcels, smoked fish dip and manuka fried bread.
Broadcaster Stacey Morrison, who has been advising the company on the annual midwinter feast, says it’s done in a spirit of celebration rather than commercial appropriation.
“I’m always real careful, look to what people are doing, and some products people go ‘that doesn’t seem very tika,’ and I think we do need to be mindful and on to it but als we need to get to a point we don’t own every company but how do we help grow the kaupapa because so many people work so hard on this,” she says.
One of the themes this year is Matariki Kāinga Hokia – Matariki calls you home.
