Deadline looms for Māori roll switch
Time is running out for Māori if they want to change rolls for the October election.
The last day to switch before the three month pre-election suspension of the option is July 13, just 16 days away.
Hone Matthews, the Electoral Commission’s chief Maori advisor, says Maori have been moving both ways in the current option with a small preference for the Maori roll.
“As of yesterday 12,106 people have changed rolls, 6531 from the general roll to the Maori roll and 5575 from the Maori roll to the general roll so there has been an increase to the Maori roll at present,” he says.
New voters can choose either roll right up to election day on Saturday, October 14.
