Ngāti Porou influence in Coco translation

Producer Tweedie Waititi says there are whakapapa links between Spain and Ngati Porou which are coming into play in a te reo Māori version of the Pixar animated film Coco.
The adaptation will include first time actor Mānuera Mānihera as Miguel, with Troy Kingi voicing Hector and Rachel House as Mama Coco.
Waititi says they decided to use Ngāti Porou mita.
“There’s a huge line of whakapapa in Ngati Porou that are half Spanish so itr is about marrying that storyline into it too. That was a pretty easy pick for us and what I’ve discovered in the film is that some of the things they say in Ngati Porou is actually quite similar to the Spanish in the film so pretty interesting findings,” she says.
Coco Reo Māori will be in cinemas on 13 July.
