Budget short on climate change action
A Māori academic says the Budget falls short of what Māori communities need to address the challenges created by climate change.
Sandy Morrison, the dean of Maori and Indigenous studies at Waikato University, says while there was some money for iwi and hapu to address mitigation, manage coastlines and collect data, she expected more.
She says for Maori it comes down to managing relationships with Papatūānuku and Ranginui.
“We’re still continuing to extract from Papa and Rangi so we need to change some of those drivers. After all, climate change is a manifestation of our common economic paradigm which we allow to continue. As some stage we’ve got to address the symptoms because it’s only going to get worse,” Professor Morrison says.
