Māori Media gets $51 million over two years in Wellbeing Budget 2023
Māori Media gets $51 million over two years in the Wellbeing Budget 2023 announced by Minister of Finance Grant Robertson.
This year’s allocation builds on the $40 million set out in the previous budget.
Minister of Economic Development Hon Willie Jackson says the investment strengthens the voices of tangata whenua on kaupapa important to Māori.
Iwi and Māori Radio Stations, Whakaata Māori as well as Te Karere on TVNZ, were singled out by whānau around the motu as their lifeline and only means of communication during the COVID19 lockdown and during Cyclone Gabriel.
Māori Media have suffered increasing operational costs over the years which has also impacted on their ability to build capacity and capability.
“This investment will help safeguard the industry against increasing costs and upskill kaimahi capability.” Says Minister Willie Jackson.
