A new musical drama at Auckland’s Te Pou Theatre aims to empower wāhine Māori through comedy.
Kōpū director Amber Cureen says the aim was to channel the humour of the cheeky kuia from te kāuta.
She’s says it went down well with opening night audiences, including acting Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni.
“It’s just amazing, people feeling really empowered. It’s a really, really wonderful thing to feel,” she says.
Kōpū runs until Sunday, with tickets selling fast for the weekend performances.
