Social bonds scare MP

Scary is how Manurewa MP Louisa Wall describes the Government’s new plan for social bonds for mental health treatment.
Finance Minister Bill English and Health Minister Jonathan Coleman are proposing that investors fund public or private sector organisations to deliver services.
If they achieve agreed results, the government will pay back the investors plus a return.
The first of four proposed social bond programmes will expand on a small pilot delivering employment services to people with mental health conditions.
Ms Wall says it’s privatisation taken to extremes.
A major study of Maori mental health, Te Rau Hinengaro, found just under half of Maori had experienced a mental health disorder during their lifetime, with the most common disorders being anxiety disorders, mood disorders and substance misuse disorders.
