Frustration at Kopu-Hikuai rebuild timetable

Waka Kotahi’s infrastructure delivery regional manager for Waikato says she understands the frustration of Coromandel locals that it might take more than a year to fix a giant slip that has taken our state highway 25 A between Kopu and Hukuai.
Jo Wilton says the road transport agency is still considering whether it can replace the road, bridge the gap or bypass it.
Losing the vital lifeline across the base of the peninsula has disrupted schools and businesses and compromised healthcare and other services.
Ms Wilton says she monitors the reaction on social media.
“The feedback’s been mixed, depending on which platform you’re on. Obviously, very much frustrated that it’s going to take that long. But we are trying to be very clear on what we are doing, and providing the updates to show the progress we are making,” she says.
Ms Wilton says road construction, done properly, is never a quick fix.
