Auckland’s volcanic cones will be closed to the public in the evenings for the week of Guy Fawkes in an effort to prevent fires.
Tūpuna Maunga Authority chair Paul Majurey says closures over the past two years have been successful, after a series of devastating fires in previous years.
The 14 ancestral mountains will be closed from Wednesday, November 2 to Sunday, November 6.
Security staff will patrol the maunga and explain the closures to the public.
Mr Majurey says a better long-term solution is for government to end private sales of fireworks.
