Kura head to Tikitapu for waka ama nationals
Organisers of next week’s Waka Ama Secondary School Nationals are pleased at the number entering despite the challenges of Covid-19 and extreme weather events.
Nga Kaihoe o Aotearoa chief executive Lara Collins, says kura are determined to get to Rotorua’s Blue Lake, Tikitapu, for the four-day competition.
” I think it’s a tiny bit down but we’re at a hundred and five, yeah 105 kura from all over. So it’s a pretty big event and we’re really stoked at the numbers,” she says.
Ms Collins says waka ama continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in Aotearoa – with its inclusiveness, accessibility, and a firm grounding in Māori and Pacific culture big attractions for all participants.
