Early childhood spend in wrong place

The National Party’s FamilyBoost tax rebate is being called a band-aid rather than a fix for childcare costs.
Party leader Chris Luxon is promising a rebate of up to $75 a week.
Arapera Card, Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood New Zealand’s pouhere kaupapa Māori, says the increase is likely to get swallowed up by the large for-profit operators which dominate the sector.
“And its not where it should be going. For me it should be going on building up of teaching resources. Towards building play equipment – both outdoor and indoor. And it shows that the for-profit sector is enriched,” she says.
Ms Card says whoever wins the next election needs to boost funding for early childhood education.
