Applications are open for a scholarship aimed at getting Ngāti Whakaue rangatahi from Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty into the hospitality industry.

The Sudima Hotels and Ngāti Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board Scholarship has been running since 2014.

The first recipeint, Awatere Douglas, is now a duty manager at the Sudima Lake Hotel in Rotorua and the group's cultural ambassador.

He says it opens a lot of doors.

"More opportunities for scholarship recipients and the likes of myself, more opportunities to grow within the company, so for young Māori like myself there is no better time than the present," Mr Douglas says.
