More intense storms could be new norm

A weather forecaster says people can expect storms to be more intense in future.
The country is starting to clean up from Cyclone Gabrielle which has brought devastation across the country, especially in Tarawhiti and Hawke’s Bay.
Angus Hine from the Met Service says the cyclone should not be seen as part of a pattern, as each such event has distinct characteristics – although the warming cllmate is a significant factor.
“The jury’s still out. The evidence is still out on whether these storms will become more frequent. They may not become more frequent but one thing that does look clear is that in a warmer climate storms that do develop can become more intense so while we may not not necessarily get these storms more often across the country, the ones that do hit us will hit us harder,” he says.
After several wet months in the north and east of the country, a period of dryer weather is expected.
