Henare takes aim at state care pipeline

Whanau Ora Minister Peeni Henare says the best thing whanau ora can do is make sure children don’t end up in state care.
Mr Henare says he’s concerned at the latest independent monitoring report on Oranga Tamariki which identified continuing problems with the child protection agency.
A majority of the 6000 children in Oranga Tamariki care are Maori.
That highlights the importance of OT reform and the creation of alternative models of care.
“It’s under way but we know there is so much more work to be done which is why as Minister for Whanau Ora, kaupapa like Ngā Tini Whetū (early intervention support) and others to make sure our whanau feel supported and more importantly that our tamarkiki don’t end up in the Oranga Tamariki or state care system because that’s the pipline many have spoken about in the past that we have to stop,” he says.
Mr Henare says safe whanau are the best environmrnts for tamariki to grow up in.
