Auckland shifts to big clean up

Whau ward councillor Kerrin Leoni says Auckland is ready to clean up.
The council has announced a two-pronged approach recovering from last week’s floods – The Big Clean Up and the Big Fix Up, to be headed by Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson and Mayor Wayne Brown respectively.
Councillor Leoni, the deputy chair of the civil defence committee, says emergency services had never dealt with a downpour of that magnitude and were overwhelmed.
She says clear communication is now a priority, with press conferences set for 1pm every day.
“For our mayor and Desley at this time it’s to be reasuring to the public and to show with transparency the mahi thatis happenign behind the scenes and how much we are getting done to help families in need,” she says.
Ms Leoni in her own Whau ward about 200 homes were affected, and council staff are knocking on doors and helping people with insurance claims.
