Mayor doubles down on Auckland state of emergency

Auckland mayor Wayne Brown has extended the state of emergency for the super city for another seven days.
He says the declaration was made on advice from civil-defence authorities, but he expects it will be lifted early.
He says Aucklanders have responded magnificently to the unprecedented weather event, and there has been little need to use the emergency powers granted by the declaration.
Mr Brown says he dropped the ball at the start of the heavy rain last Friday was too slow to be seen.
The priority ahead of the Waitangi long weekend, is to ensure Aucklanders are safe, well-informed and well-supported.
The Met Service is forecasting a southwest change spreaing across Aotearoa on Sunday and Monday, marking the start of a more settled spell of weather for much of the country.
