Ngati Hine chair Waihoroi Shortland on Paakiwaha.
Last week the chair of Ngapuhi Runanga, Raniera (Sonny) Tau was in court. He admitted lying about whether he had shot five protected wood pigeons. Mr Tau appeared in the Southland District Court and admitted perverting the course of justice.
Chair of Ngati Hine Waihoroi Shortland asked about whether or not Mr Tau should step down from his role on the runanga says "the perspective of people up here (Northland) is that integrity is shot. It's a hard thing to recover from and you will always have your efforts questioned and it's a long road back to redemption".
Waihoroi Shortland says ". At the end of the day he (Sonny Tau) is still my brother in law, he's whanau. Those things don't stop at the gate… We know the burden he has to carry personally. He's made of the kind of stuff he'll get through that part I've no doubt about that".
