Abuse warning from Davis as women step up
Labour deputy leader Kelvin Davis is calling on men to stand up against those who abuse women.
Mr Davis was as Ratana Pa today for Jacinda Ardern’s last public engagement as Prime Minister and to introduce the new leadership team of Chris Hipkins and Carmel Sepuloni.
He says since Ms Ardern announced she was stepping down the revelations about the amount of online abuse she was receiving should come as an eye opener – and a spur for action.
“I just hope now she’s going that abuse doesn’t swing towards Carmel and I want to say up front I think us as men, we have to start stepping up and saying this misogyny and this abuse that’s being hurled at women and violence of all sorts towards women, we actually have to stand up and do something about it. It’s not right, it’s not acceptable and I think that is going to be one of my little crusades I go on this year,” Mr Davis says.
He says Jacinda Ardern has left a legacy for Maoridom, and he’s confident Chris Hipkins will continue the work.
