Zelensky anti-colonisation message resonating with Māori

Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta says the Ukrainian situation should resonate with Māori because of their experience with colonisation.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday addressed a special sitting of Parliament, thanking New Zealand for its contribution so far and asking for its support for his 10-point plan to end Russia’s invasion.
He also highlighted the environmental cost of the war.
Ms Mahuta says President Zelensky appealed to shared values which New Zealand has defended staunchly.”That’s been long-standing. That hasn’t just happened overnight. and we were one of the first countries to join the predecessor of the United Nations and we were one of the first countries to really shift our orientation, when conflict append around the world, to take more of a proactive role in terms of peacekeeping, restoration and reconstruction. I think by and large Maori and other New Zealanders are quite proud of that,” she says.
