Papakainga add to housing boom

Auckland mayor Len Brown says a number of papakainga developments are contributing to a boom in house building in the super city.
Mr Brown says Reserve Bank restrictions on lending have taken many first home buyers out of the market.
But the number of building consents is back to 2007 levels.
"There’s a big bow wave of activity coming in behind those building and resource consents and beside that you’ve got Maori three or four papakainga applications. Waimahia is really firing along, the road is starting to go in out there in Clendon, so that is an excellent part-iwi initiative there. It is exciting times on the housing front and there’s lots of choice," Mr Brown says.
The council is trying to find a balance between keeping rates affordable and developing the infrastructure a growing city needs.
