No evidence to prosecute for Waiharara blaze

Fire and Emergency says there is not enough evidence to prosecute anyone for a 50-day fire north of Kaitaia a year ago.
The fire started on December 18 at Waiharara and burned until early February, consuming around 2800 hectares, much of it conservation land.
Te Hiku region manager Ron Devlin says it was caused by a permitted burn to clear land on private property that got out of control.
Heavy dry fuels, high temperatures and strong gusty winds contributed to its spread.
Mr Devlin says Fire and Emergency has been working with Ngāi Takoto and Department on a fire response plan for the area.
He says while there is no active flame or smoke at present, the fire could potentially be burning underground.
