Whangārei hospital build shrunk claims Reti

National’s health spokesperson Shane Reti claims corners are being cut in the $780 million Whangārei hospital rebuild.
He says information leaked to him shows $200 million was shaved off the budget, meaning the hospital will be at full capacity within three years of it being built in 2031.
“So they were offered $711 million. They needed $917m to meet the full business case and the capital investment committee said ‘no, peel $200m off that, reduce beds, reduce size, don’t have a carpark, don’t tear down the building that’s got asbestos and is leaning towards Maunu Rd,’ that’s what the leaked documents show,” Dr Reti says.
He’s also concerned it will take nine years for the rebuild to be completed.
