Iwi social workers to get pay equity
The Government has decided to extend pay equity to all social workers in community-based social services.
The Public Service Association says it will affect about 4,600 workers.
National secretary Melissa Woolley says the work of social workers has been historically undervalued because it was predominantly undertaken by women.
The extension follows a last month’s settlement extending pay equity for some 500 workers employed by five iwi and NGO social service employers.
Those workers received average increases of between $20,000 to $30,000, bringing their pay to the same level as their Oranga Tamariki counterparts.
