Emmy winner says Māori storytelling the winner

The Māori co-producer of an LGBTQ short film video series says winning an Emmy will open doors for future Māori story-tellers.
Rūrangi is the story of a transgender man’s return to his conservative rural hometown – and how his change of sex affects relationships with his closest whanau and friends.
Tweedie Waititi says it’s a deserving Emmy winner – but that was never the goal.
“I’m more hoping that these kinds of tohu, or these kinds of taonga will encourage our next generation to believe in Maori story-telling – to believe in their true story telling, whatever that story may be.” she says.
Season two of Rūrangi is being edited, and she hopes there will be a third season.
Rūrangi is on both the NEON and HULU streaming platforms.
