Government needed for Rotorua homeless fix

Long-standing Rotorua Lakes councillor Trevor Maxwell says central government needs to do more to fix the emergency housing crisis in his city.
Independent commissioners this week heard submissions on an application by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for resource consents that would allow 13 motels to secure emergency housing contracts for up to the next five years.
Mr Maxwell, who gets sworn in today for a record 17th term, says the issue is high on the new council’s agenda.
“Bottom line is nobody wants to push anyone out of motels and back into Kuirau Park and Government Gardens and all that but they want government to bear in mind that our community has been doing the heavy lifting,” he says.
Mr Maxwell says at least a third of those put into emergency housing weren’t originally from Rotorua.
