Survivor advocate angry at abuse minister’s inaction
An observer of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State and Religious care says survivors are dying while the Government does nothing in response to the abuse being exposed.
Veteran social worker Paora Crawford Moyle says the Royal Commission released its interim report a year ago setting out some recommendation on what needs to happen, particularly for Maori survivors.
There has been no response so far from the responsible minister, Chris Hipkins.
“We’ve been hearing promises of this, that and the next thing. I don’t think Chris Hipkins gives two fancies about survivors. That’s unpalatable to me. I find it hard to accept. We’ve got survivors dying. We had one pass away last week, and that was very sad, without any acknowledgement or recompense for a lifetime of abuse by the state,” she says.
Paora Crawford Moyle says she’s shocked by some of the responses from current administrators, mostly older white males, who continue to minimise and cover up what happened within their organisations.
