Kaupapa Māori lens on Covid impact research

A Whanganui-based kaupapa Māori research institute has won funding from the Ministry of Health to look at the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 and make recommendations on future pandemic responses.
Te Atawhai o Te Ao lead researcher Miriama Cribb says it will look specifically at the vaccination roll out and the mandates.
She says early indications are many Māori were upset they weren’t given time to wānanga and reflect on the options they were given.
“This project will give an opportunity for people to have their say which is what a lot of people want without being judged or ostracised around their decision so if anything we hope this project can create that space for people to have a korero and to share their whakairo,” Ms Cribb says.
The research isn’t confined to the medical impacts but will also look at the cultural, social and political impacts.
