Gang outreach helping cut gun crime

Download AudioWairoa has recorded the biggest drop in gun crimes in the country – and mayor Craig Little credits the formation of a community partnership group.
Craig Little says the partnership group brings together iwi, government agencies, and other community organisations who talk with police and gangs on a regular basis.
“Gang members, dare I say it, aren’t all bad people but obviously there are some bad ones as well and that’s a problem but the first step is work with gangs and that’s what we’ve been doing but also the police need to work with the community which they have been doing and it’s showing the results,” he says.
Mr Little says he’s working with a new gang leader in Wairoa to pick up youngsters falling through the gaps at school.
