Ahuwhenua open days cause for Māori pride
Associate Minister of Agriculture, Meka Whaitiri, wants to see more Māori farming businesses promoting themselves – as role models for future generations.
Field days for this year’s Ahuwhenua Trophy for Māori farming excellence are going on now, with Hereheretau Station near Wairoa opening its gates on Thursday.
Ms Whaitiri says Mori can be reluctant to publicly highlight their success.
“I just think it gives us encouragement in our farming sector, particularly about what our Māori farms are doing and generally under the radar so you never hear about the successful farming operations unless hey put their names in the hat for something like Ahuwhenua which as we know is the oldest farming excellence awards in Aotearoa,” she says.
The winners of the Ahuwhenua Trophy as well as the young Māori farmer of the year will be announced at the awards dinner at Pettigrew Green Arena, Taradale, Hawke’s Bay on October 21.
