Māori dominate Laureates line up
Māori have taken an almost clean sweep of this years’ Arts Foundation Te Tumi Toi Laureate Award recipients.
Tame Iti, who turned activism into an art, receives the Burr/Tatham Trust Award for his multi-disciplinary activities.
Weaver Maureen Lander receives the Theresa Gattung Female Arts Practitioners Award.
The Mata Aho Collective – Erana Baker, Sarah Hudson, Bridget Reweti and Tui Te Tau – who recently collaborated with Dr Lander on an installation at Auckland Art gallery Toi o Mamaki, get the My Art Visual Arts Award.
Jeweller and sculptor Areta Wilkinson picks up the Jillian Friedlander Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Award, and Hone Kouka gets the Sir Roger Hall Theatre Practitioner Award.
Paula Morris is this year’s Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate for literature.
For the first time the foundation is giving a Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate Award, which goes to ground-breaking fashion designer Lindah Lepou.
Each laureate will receive a $30,000 koha.
