Miraka talks milk with top UK trade minister
The chair of Taupō-based dairy processor Miraka, Kingi Smiler, hopes the UK-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement will provide greater opportunities for his company.
On Saturday Miraka hosted the UK secretary of state for international trade, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who was one of the signatories to the agreement signed in February.
Mr Smiler says Miraka’s geothermally powered manufacturing plant means it has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry.
He says they were able to show Minister Trevelyan how the company applies Te Ao Māori principles in operating the business, engaging with people and exercising kaitiakitanga in caring for the natural environment and resources.
Miraka is one of the largest businesses in the Taupō District employing 145 staff.
