Rangatahi centre stage at Turangawaewae
Executive chair of Te Arataura Rahui Papa says almost all of the Tainui’s marae are represented at Turangawaewae.
The young people have taken part in sport and cultural activities, heard presentations from tribal leaders and held workshops and debates.
He says they all have an interest in their culture, language and heritage, and are looking for ways to be more active.
Mr Papa says there is a long tradition in the Kingitanga of focusing on youth, with King Tawhiao reminding the iwi during his reign that his way of life would not continue in the days of his grandchildren.
"Te Puea talked about mahia te mahi, get on with the job, just get in there and do it. Potatau talked about taking spirituality with you and not forsaking those teachings of the past. Almost every monarch in their time had a strong focus on rangatahi development as well," he says.
