Kiingitanga textbooks work of mana

A highlight of this year’s Koroneihana Hui at Turangawaewae Marae will be the launch of a new bilingual series of books for schools about the Kiingitanga.
Author Greg Koia, of Ngati Porou, says it was a huge honour to be commissioned to write Te Ara o te Kiingitanga and to reflect in on all those iwi and rangatira who came together in the 1850s to present a unified Māori front to the British monarchy.
He says it involved some of the greatest chiefs whose mana lives on.
“No matter which version of the book you read, the aspiration is that whakairo Māori and tikanga Māori will be heard and felt in both versions of the book,” he says.
Te Ara o te Kiingitanga was funded by the Ministry of Education as a resource for the new history curriculum, and the project was co-led by the office of Kiingi Tuheitia.
