Inside game frustrates Green activists

Former Green MP Nandor Tanczos says Climate Change Minister James Shaw may have been caught between the expectations of party activists and the realities of working within the system.
Mr Shaw is being forced to stand again as co-leader after a minority of delegates at the party’s AGM voted to reopen nominations for the position.
Mr Tanczos, who now sits on Whakatane District Council, says despite having little leverage within the Government, Mr Shaw he has done an extraordinary job in trying to turn around the carbon-intensive and polluting system that is the New Zealand economy.
“You do need those people on the outside going ‘you’re not going fast enough, we need to do more,’ and it’s true, we do need to hear those voices, but you’ve also got to acknowledge that when you’re on the inside the practicalities of making that change, they’re complex,” he says.
