The director of a film based on the 2007 Tuhoe police raids says he looked for a new way to tell the story.
Muru premieres tomorrow on the opening night of the New Zealand International Film Festival in Auckland.
It stars Cliff Curtis, Simone Kessell, Manu Bennett, Jay Ryan and Tame Iti playing himself.
Te Arepa Kahi says rather than attempting a straight retelling of events, he wanted to tap into the mamae still felt by many in Tuhoe about the occupation of their villages by armed police.
Muru goes on general release on September 1.
