Download AudioWaipareira chief executive and Māori Party president John Tamihere are taking notes from Brian Tamaki’s motorway protest.
After gathering at Auckland Domain on Saturday, the Destiny Church leader led about 1000 people onto the motorway to voice opposition to a grab bag of anti-government grievances including inflation and Covid restrictions.
Mr Tamihere says he doesn’t agree with the particular kaupapa but he defends their right to protest.
“Without standing up to the government and without standing up to inequity, inequality before the law, Māori would never have gotten to where we have got. Land marches, te reo marches, all of those, they count, but you’ve to turn out numbers, and sooner or later we will have national Māori days of action where we will close the country down for the day,” he says.
