Minority makes Green top job no Shaw thing
The Green Party is looking for a new co-leader after James Shaw failed to gain the support of 75 percent of members in the annual election.
Thirty-two of the 197 voting delegates at the online annual general meeting voted to reopen nominations in what’s seen as a protest against Mr Shaw’s performance as Climate Change Minister, where he has sought to build consensus with Labour.
He could put his name forward again for the vote, which will be held within the next five weeks.
In the meantime, the party will be led by Marama Davidson, who had her position confirmed.
Under the Greens’ constitution, one co-leader must be a woman, with the other position open to a person of any gender, and one co-leader is Māori.
Mr Shaw says the Prime Minister has asked him to stay as Climate Change Minister.
