Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the late Ricky Houghton was a champion for his community and for Māori.
The 2018 Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year winner died in Auckland on Monday aged 62.
Mr Jackson says before returning to his hau kainga, Mr Houghton was urban Māori.
“He always had a sense of spirit and community and got all his skills out at Waipareira and then took them to the north and he’s done a wonderful job there in the last few years in terms of working with people, uplifting their lives, uplifting families’ lives, Māori housing, Māori development in the north. He’s been just a great champion, our Ricky Houghton,” he says.
Richy Hougton was taken today to Te Paatu Marae in Papapuria near Kaitaia.
His funeral service is on Friday
