Bureaucracy kept in check at Māori Health Authority

The head of the new Māori Health Authority says she has no intention of building a large bureaucracy.
Riana Manuel says coming from kaupapa Māori organisations she knows the importance of making sure any money is spent on the health and well being of the people.
Some back of house bureaucracy is needed, but the days of everyone being in one large building in Wellington are over.
“So we need people in our team. They don’t have to be at the centre somewhere. They can be around the regions so we want people to stay closer to their home, to their kainga. There are other ways to engage whānau to work with us and that’s the reach out to our partners, out to our kaupapa Māori organisations, second the work out to those organisations so we are not this big bureaucracy. That way you can manage the whole lot more efficiently,” Ms Manuel says,
She says the iwi Māori partnership boards will play a big part in decision making, which will drive localised services based in communities.
