Armstrong master plan changes gang future
A Ngāti Kahungunu man with deep whānau ties to gangs is using higher education to offer a pathway out.
Levi Armstrong has completed his Master of Health Science degree with distinction at Te Aho A Māui, Eastern Institute of Technology.
He’s also a partner in Napier-based firm Domynis, which runs fitness programmes and has also developed a mobile gym in a shipping container.
“I do a bit of work with some of our whānau kahukura and some of our Mob whānau here in Hawke’s Bay, trying to change their mindset over what it is like being in the gang but there are a lot of options out there and they can make the change and a real difference in their own communities so I am trying to find those rough diamonds and give them a bit of a shine,” he says.
For his degree, Levi Armstrong looked at how Covid lockdowns affected the physical and mental well-being of his community.
