Wrong time for reform says Reti


Opposition health spokesperson Shane Reti says the health reforms coming on July 1 will put further pressure on a system at breaking point.
He says the current problems are about people, not policy – and there needs to be greater emphasis on building up the workforce.
“As the system’s breaking, why would you be doing the biggest health reforms in the past 20 years against a background of a system that’s already breaking. And the health reforms are not the saviour – they’re now becoming a contributor to the problem we are having here now. We should be fixing business as usual first before they even contemplated doing heath reforms,” Dr Reti says.
He says the fastest way to fix the crisis is to change immigration settings so nurses can be brought in at the same speed as doctors,
